Summary

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), the Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) Medical Assistant Associate will perform basic patient care and specific duties which promote clinical care, safety, and comfort of the adult and pediatric patient in the PES. Is accountable for all patient care rendered, adhering to nursing care standards, and for promoting teamwork among peers. Incorporates the patient relations principles into all interactions.

Responsibilities*

As directed and supervised by the RN:

Provide care on a functional basis to a patient or group of patients. Characteristic duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide comfort measures for adult and pediatric patients to include provision of blankets, hot/cold packs, pillows, clothing, meals, etc.

  • Transport, ambulate, and lift patients.

  • Observe and document patient condition and report changes to the responsible RN and/or other care provider.

  • Measure and record intake and output.

  • Collect specimens and process appropriately.

  • Clean and check equipment and work area; stock medical/surgical supplies, etc.

  • Provide supplies for ADL's, assist patients with ADL's if needed or required.

  • Frequent documentation of patients (BARS every 12 mins) and frequent rounding of unit to maintain unit and patient safety.

  • Monitor signs and symptoms of escalating behavior and report to RN.

  • Proper documentation of restraint and seclusion events.

  • Provide constant supervision for one-on-one care as directed by RN.

  • Process order renewals as directed by RN or provider.

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Graduation from a medical assistant program, or equivalent combination of education and 1-3 years of experience for the Associate level or 0-1 years of experience for the Assistant level.

  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.

  • Moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transferring patients.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work well within a team setting.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under mental and emotional pressure of emergency situations.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider verification from American Heart Association.

  • 1 year of direct patient care experience in an acute care facility is necessary.

  • Ability to calibrate clinical equipment, recognize abnormal physiology, and perform and record results clinical testing procedures is necessary.

  • Experience with MiChart - EPIC

  • Experience working with the Mental Health population in a crisis situation.

  • Demonstrate active listening, written, verbal, and information technology skills.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Course work in an Allied Health field, including basic science and math desirable.

  • Certification as a medical assistant.

  • Experience working within a large complex healthcare setting.

  • Knowledge of university policies & procedures.

This position is a 36 hours per week position (12 hour shifts), Shift: Nights

Additional Information

  • Directly responsible to the Clinical Nurse Supervisor, Manager, and Medical Director of PES.

  • Functionally responsible to the RN on the assigned shift.

  • Personnel supervised: None

  • Interrelationships: works effectively with patients, families, and all members of the health care team.

Background Screening

Under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
